Descaling an espresso machine: how often, and how to tell
Scale is the single most common cause of a dead home espresso machine. It is also the cheapest thing to prevent.
Every time an espresso machine heats water, the calcium and magnesium dissolved in that water come out of solution and stay behind. That deposit — scale — is an excellent insulator, which is exactly the problem: it sits between the heating element and the water it is supposed to heat.
A scaled machine does not fail dramatically. It gets slower to come up to temperature, then less stable during a shot, then it starts tripping its thermal cutout, and then one day the element burns out because it was heating scale instead of water.
The interval depends on your water, not your machine
Manufacturers print an interval because they have to print something. The honest answer is that descaling frequency is a function of two things: how hard your water is, and how much water you put through the machine.
As a working guide for a machine used a few times a day:
- Hard water (above roughly 180 ppm / 10 gpg): every 4–8 weeks.
- Moderate water: every 3 months.
- Soft or filtered water: every 6 months.
- Distilled or properly treated espresso water: rarely, but check anyway.
If you take one thing from this page, take this: test your water before deciding anything. A pack of hardness strips costs less than a bag of coffee and turns the whole question from guesswork into a number. It is also the only way to know whether a filter is worth buying, because in genuinely soft water a filter buys you very little.
The symptoms of leaving it too long
- Longer warm-up, or the ready light cycling more often than it used to.
- Reduced flow from the group even with a familiar grind and dose.
- Steam pressure that drops away faster during a milk jug.
- Noise: a scaled boiler is louder, because bubbles nucleate on the deposit.
- Water in the drip tray that looks slightly cloudy or leaves white rings.
By the time flow is visibly reduced, the scale is already thick. Descaling then can dislodge sheets of it that block a solenoid or a gicleur — which is why the sensible strategy is a boring, unremarkable schedule rather than a rescue operation.
What descaler actually is
Descaling solution is an acid — usually citric, lactic or sulfamic — that dissolves carbonate scale. Two consequences follow.
First, it attacks metal too, slowly. That is why the instruction is always to flush thoroughly and never to leave solution sitting in a boiler overnight. Second, not every machine may be descaled the same way. Machines with brass or copper boilers tolerate it well. Aluminium components do not tolerate strong acid at all, and some manufacturers void warranties for anything but their own product.
Vinegar is a bad idea in a machine you care about. It is a weak acid at a concentration you cannot control, it leaves a smell that takes many litres to flush, and it is harsher on seals than a formulated product.
Machines that must never be descaled through the group
On a machine with a three-way solenoid valve, descaling solution run through the group head passes over the valve and out of the drain. Manufacturers of E61 and similar groups generally specify that descaling is done through the boiler and the water routes only, with the group and its gasket excluded, because acid attacks the rubber.
The general rule: descale the boiler and the water path; backflush the group. They are two different jobs with two different chemicals, and mixing them up damages parts.
The one habit that replaces most descaling
Filter the water going in. A basic jug filter reduces hardness enough to stretch a 6-week interval into a 3-month one, and it removes the chlorine taste that otherwise ends up in the cup. It is the cheapest upgrade in espresso and the one nobody photographs.
If you are on genuinely hard water and running a machine daily, an inline or tank-mounted resin filter pays for itself in one avoided boiler.
