The espresso machine checklist to run before you pay
Twelve checks, most of them thirty seconds each, that between them prevent almost every avoidable espresso purchase mistake.
Espresso machines are heavy, expensive and awkward to return. Almost every regretted purchase traces back to a check nobody ran. Here is the list.
Before choosing a model
1. Decide whether you make milk drinks, and how many at once. This single answer determines the boiler layout you need, and it is the only specification question that reliably changes daily life. The three layouts.
2. Test your water hardness. It affects which machine is sensible, whether you need a filter, and what maintenance will cost. Why it matters this much.
3. Measure the space, including height. Machine depth versus counter depth, and clearance to lift the lid or fill the tank under a wall cabinet.
4. Budget for the grinder before the machine. The order that matters.
Before choosing a listing
5. Confirm the exact variant. Colour, tank versus plumbed, PID or not, voltage, and any regional version. These are frequently different products sold under one model name, and they are not interchangeable.
6. Confirm the condition. New, open box, refurbished, ex-display. Read the description, not just the badge. What the labels mean.
7. Confirm what is in the box. Portafilter, baskets, tamper, water filter, blind basket. Missing accessories can quietly consume a discount.
8. Check the warranty terms — length, whether it covers labour, and whether the retailer or the manufacturer honours it. Grey-import machines sometimes carry no local warranty at all.
Before paying
9. Add shipping and get to a total. For a heavy machine this can change which store is cheapest.
10. Compare that total against other stores today, not against list price. Across the products several of our tracked stores sell identically, the typical gap is $68.
11. Check the return policy specifically for large items. Who pays return shipping, how long the window is, and whether an opened box affects it.
12. Check parts availability for the model. Gaskets, screens, and group parts should be easy to find from more than one source. A machine whose spares come from a single importer is a machine with a support risk. Spares are a real market of their own — our parts index.
The two checks people skip
Timestamp the price. A price you saw last month is not an offer. Every price we publish carries the moment we read it, and anything outside our freshness window is excluded from the comparison rather than shown as current.
Read the discount claim carefully. "40% off" against a list price nobody charges is not a 40% saving. Measure against what the market is actually asking. How to tell.
